作为新中国第一代美术史家，父母的工作很具开创性。1960年从苏联学成回来后，母亲就在中央工艺美术学院（清华大学美术学院前身）工作，父亲被分配到中央美术学院任教。那时候，中国刚刚有美术史这个专业。母亲清醒认识到，中国工艺美术界也要有专业的理论研究队伍和学术期刊。在她的努力下，《装饰》杂志于1980年复刊。1983年，在院长张仃鼓励下，母亲起草报告，又到教育部和文化部的各个部门审批盖章，终于在中央工艺美术学院建立了工艺美术史论系，这是全国第一个工艺美术史论专业系，也是除中央美术学院外，全国第二个可以招收本科生的专业艺术史论系。母亲担任第一届系主任。这以后她更忙了。除了繁重的行政工作，她还开设了欧洲艺术史、俄罗斯艺术史、艺术理论等很多课程。
